We’re coming up on one month of summer and days are about to get hotter, and hotter. That means it’s the perfect time to talk about summer layering.
Wait. What the –??
That’s right, guys! It’s only gonna keep get hotter as the days go by, so this is where layering comes in because we wouldn’t want to sacrifice style for comfort, now would we? We can have it all! It’s all just in putting together the right pieces. Such layering should be more gentle and soft. Play with cooler fabrics and then mix and match!
Below you will find 5 (key) summer layering pieces, along with inspiration for you to try! I hope you’ll love them as much as I do, and that they keep you cool in the summer!
Bandanas are everywhere right now, and how can they not be when their versatility makes for the perfect summer piece. The most common way of styling is as a neck tie – it’s perfect for when wearing a basic tee and shorts or even a dress. Other ways to go about styling a bandana: wearing it as a headband, a hair tie, a choker, a top, an add-on to your straw bag, and so on. Told ya it was versatile! And just like that, your summer look goes beyond just a pair of shorts and a tee.
2. Lace or sheer
There’s nothing you’ll get a better summer breeze in, than with either of these two. You can pair them up together: a lace bralette under a sheer top or you can layer them separately. My go-to look, when styling a bralette, is under a tee, or a dress. It’s a flirty way of styling. The “bolder” way of styling is a regular black bra under a sheer top. I’ve seen this look on other people, and I love it! I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ll share when I do!
3. Chambray cover up
I love, love, love this summer layering piece. Think of it as a chic upgrade to the kimono. It’s lightweight, neutral (so it goes with just about everything), and you can dress it up or dress it down. If it’s hot out, wear it to the beach with shorts and your bikini top. If it’s hot out but you’re not on your way to the beach, wear it with shorts or jeans and a crop top or a tank. Pair this perfect cover up with a dress! I have to say, I think it’s my favorite when it’s layered with a short, summer dress – but it’s all about personal style, so have fun with it!
4. Denim vest or duster
Another great alternative to the chambray cover up, or kimono, would be a denim vest or a lightweight duster. They’re such great layering pieces – simple, but they add that little oomph to your look and you can layer them any way you want: over a sheer dress or tee, tank top, tee and shorts, off the shoulder tops and jeans… literally anything, anything.
5. Miscellaneous accessories
Bracelets – does anyone else feel like bracelets are that much more fun in the summer? Stack as many of them on, as you can! Pura Vida has such a wide variety of stackable bracelets, and they have anklets as well!
Necklaces – layer, layer, layer! Wear chunky necklaces or dainty ones. Go from short to long or dainty to chunky, or all of the above! Pom poms are in right now, try a pom pom necklace! Or go for a metal piece to go with your belt!
Pins – Probably not something you were expecting to see on here, but pins can be a total game changer! You can literally put them on anything. I have a pineapple pin from Pintrill, that I love putting on my fedora! I also have a cactus, a guitar and a sombrero which I love pinning together on special occasions like Cinco de Mayo or Taco Tuesday! I’m currently wearing them on a denim button down. Give it a try – it’ll instantly boost your outfit!
Never underestimate the power of layering, guys! Summer or Winter, rain or shine, layers will always, always come through for you.
